The nation mourns for it's beloved president, former President Corazon C. Aquino. She passed away at the age of 76."Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m. (19:18 GMT Friday) of cardio-respiratory arrest," her son, Senator Benigno Aquino III, told reporters in Manila.
President Aquino was hospitalized in early July. She was downed by complications of colon cancer and was admitted to Makati Medical Center. She had been battling the disease for more than a year now since March 2008 when her condition was initially diagnosed. She was even informed by her doctors then that she had only three months to live.
A very brave woman that she is, she proved them wrong having lived longer. Her public appearances and public speeches despite her condition proved her strong will. She pursued chemotherapy and her body responded positively but lately, due to complications, she succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest.
President Aquino would always remain in our heart. She was instrumental in restoring our democracy. She's no doubt the champion of democracy. Being a devout catholic, she would always summon us not to forget to pray. A role model, a mother of our nation, she led our country to a peaceful revolt during the 1986 People Power Revolt and proved to the whole world how great Filipinos are. Her body may leave us but her spirit would always remain. She's not only a role model, a mother, she's a national hero.
